Elizabeth Gaskell, a 19th century English author, completed a plethora of short stories as well as novels and was a friend and contemporary of many other famous writers including Charlotte Bronte, Charles Dickens and Harriet Beecher Stowe. Many of her works urged better communication and understanding between workers and their boss, between wealthy and the poor, reminding readers that all people had value, regardless of trade or title.
